You are sitting in your meeting/ boardroom which has had the same chairs for the last 10 years. The chairs were comfortable when you first got them however, they are now well and truly past their “use-by-date”. You notice a few of your team do not seem to be fully concentrating on the meeting. In fact your team maybe dreaming of their next overseas holiday due to your office furniture causing them discomfort and we all know it is very hard to concentrate if you are not comfortable. Maybe it is your chairs that should be taking a well-earned retirement.
In a survey completed last December (of 150 office workers by Staples, a unit of Staples, Framingham, Mass), some 86 % of office workers say their furniture causes discomfort, and more than half say that if they could make one change to their office furniture, it would be a better chair.
Many people outside (and within!) the office furniture industry grossly underestimate the importance of the work chair. Numerous articles have warned us about the perils of too much sitting but the truth is that many of us still have to sit at a desk whether or not that is our preferred mode of work. Even with frequent breaks, it is essential to optimise our comfort and posture by ensuring the chair(s) we use regularly are well chosen.
Here are some points to consider:
- If you have a worn-out chair then anything new you sit in will feel like a million dollars by comparison – it still need to be the right chair.
- Cheap does not necessarily mean the best. Pads can lose their shape, low quality components can break.
- A bad chair could result in a lot of aches and pains for both you and your team.’
- Always consider buying from a reputable dealer, someone who can offer good advice and someone you can trust.
- Have a list of what you consider are the essential and desirable features you need in your chairs – e.g. height and width adjustable arms. Seat angle adjustment, lumbar support, extra deep seat (for taller people), higher gas lift for those who may prefer to work standing up etc.
- Avoid buying the same chair to fit all. This will not be a wise decision.
- Improving the ergonomics of office chairs and other equipment increases productivity by an average 17% based on a review of 40 studies of office workers published in 2008 in the Journal of Safety Research. The studies found workers tended to have fewer muscular-skeletal disorders and a lower rate of absenteeism and errors. It’s worth the investment!!
